6 The Diocese Australia For thousands and thousands of years, the Sandhurst area was inhabited by Aboriginal people. European settlement to the area commenced in the late 1830s and, by the 1850s, there was rapid movement of Europeans to the gold-rush centres and rich pastoral areas; Catholic missions were soon established to meet the spiritual and pastoral needs of these pioneers. The territory of the Diocese of Sandhurst was officially excised from Diocese of Melbourne and erected as a diocese on 30 March 1874. When the ecclesiastical Province of Melbourne was established in 1887, the Diocese of Sandhurst became a suffragan diocese of the Metropolitan See of Melbourne.
