Year in Review 2023 Catholic Diocese of Sandhurst 51 “Regent Honey Eater Totem Project” – a collaborative mixed media artwork by Year 11 Religion and Art students at Galen College, Wangaratta. The work chosen by Bishop Shane Mackinlay as the winner of the 2023 Bishop’s Choice Award from secondary school entries in Catholic Education Sandhurst’s MacKillop Art Awards. Your work of art draws on both indigenous totems and Christian patron saints to encourage a renewed commitment to local action to care for our common home.” Bishop Shane’s choice from the primary school works was a marker and paint work titled “Let the Words You Speak be Full of Grace” by Bella Lappin, a Year 6 student at St Joseph’s Primary in Chiltern. Bishop Shane wrote in his award letter to Bella: “Your work of art thoughtfully and beautifully illustrates the way that love and grace reach out and embrace us, when we experience God’s love for us, and when we share that love with others.” The Bishop’s Choice Award was presented for the first time in 2022 in recognition of the connection between Bishop Shane Mackinlay and the Sandhurst education community which he serves. Bishop Shane acknowledges the importance of celebrating, affirming, and supporting the students of Sandhurst in their creative endeavours and the award highlights the value of The Arts in the life of the church.
