Parishioners at Tallangatta
Celebrate A Century
S
t Michael’s Parish, Tallangatta, celebrated the 100th anniversary of its establishment.
The Parish was established on April 7, 1916, by the Bishop of Sandhurst, Bishop Stephen
Reville, who appointed Fr James Lawless as the first Parish Priest. The parish included
churches at Granya, Walwa, Corryong, Mitta Mitta and Tallangatta. Fr Lawless travelled to
these remote churches in a buggy drawn by two horses.
Bishop Leslie Tomlinson concelebrated Mass with Fr Joseph Pothenparampil, Fr Brian Carey
and Fr Denis Crameri. After Mass, a plaque was unveiled to celebrate the occasion. A crowd
of 75 local and past parishioners enjoyed a lunch, where a celebratory cake was cut by the two
eldest parishioners, Mrs Mary Butler, 100 in June, and Mrs Elise Barwick, 92.
The descendants of the original families who were present at the celebration were: Campbell,
Cardwell, Duncan, Kelly, Kirk, Ley, Mullins, Murphy, O’Brien, O’Connell, O’Reilly, Shanahan
and Tobin.
