Further devastation in the Philippines. Caritas Australia responds.

Typhoon Vamco has struck the Philippines on Wednesday night, causing further destruction. It is the third typhoon and fifth tropical cyclone to affect the Philippines in less than three weeks. Over 2000 families and 200,000 people have been evacuated from places like Manila and the Quezon province. There have been reports of flash flooding, power outages and widespread damage to agriculture and infrastructure.

Caritas partners are on the ground assessing damage. Here, our partner, NASSA/Caritas Philippines is appealing for your support https://www.facebook.com/dharmannofficial/videos/220329809097232

Since early October, Vietnam and Cambodia have experienced unprecedented rainfall and severe flooding. Dozens of people have been killed, and hundreds of thousands of homes have been submerged.

Typhoon Quinta hit the Philippines on October 23, and was followed by Typhoon Goni – the world’s strongest storm this year and the most powerful to hit the country since Typhoon Haiyan – only a week later. These typhoons brought havoc, hitting the Philippines with winds of up to 225 kilometres per hour, and causing even more flooding in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Across the region, homes were destroyed and livelihoods lost to the storms and floodwaters. Entire villages were isolated or without power. Many regions have lost communications and road access due to landslides and flooding.

Hundreds of thousands of people have fled to evacuation centres, where the risks of spreading COVID-19 are high. On the day that Typhoon Goni hit, there were nearly 3,000 new cases reported in the Philippines alone.

And then, on top of all this Typhoon Vamco struck on Thursday, creating further destruction. The need to provide vital aid to those affected by the unfolding disaster is great. You can help provide critical supplies, services and essential food that will save lives.

Caritas has been working in the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia for years. Our partners are monitoring the impacts of these combined disasters and assessing the damage and working with the government to coordinate a quick response.
This devastation caused by the worst storms and flooding in the Philippines, Cambodia and Vietnam in nearly a decade, is urging us all to act.

The National Director of Caritas Philippines, Bishop Colin Bagaforo says, "The typhoon will surely bring greater poverty to our communities, as they have also been battling against the effects of COVID-19. So with humility, we appeal for everyone's sincere acts of kindness, generosity and compassion."
