Ninety and the beauty of Sr Kathleen still shines

By Jackson Saunders

Bendigo Mercy Sister, Sr Kathleen Slattery, celebrated her 90th birthday on March 8 with a luncheon at the Windermere Hotel in Kangaroo Flat. About 35 people attended the celebration, including family, friends and parishioners. Bishop of Sandhurst, Shane Mackinlay, and the Director of Education for the Sandhurst Diocese, Paul Desmond, were also among the attendees.

Others present included former school students of Kathleen’s and colleagues from ministries she has been part of in her life with the Mercy Sisters.
The celebration was organised by St Kilian’s parishioners, Tony and June Power who, along with others from the parish, were delighted to be with Kathleen on her special day.

Parish Administrator, Fr Junray Rayna, was present for the occasion, as was Fr Rom Hayes, who gave a moving speech about Kathleen. Fr Rom said that there was one particular word, which he thought of in connection to Kathleen: “beauty.” This recognised the beauty of her personality, faith, ministry, relationships and artwork, among other things.

Miggy Podosky from St Peter’s Primary School, where Kathleen served as the inaugural principal, was also present; and Sr Therese Power rsm was one of many people to travel from Melbourne for the occasion.

In addition to her involvement in St Kilian’s Parish, Kathleen has been an active supporter of the Sandhurst seminarians in recent years. This has included attending our family day celebrations each year, as well as important milestones in our studies for the priesthood.

Those present for the luncheon, who have cherished Kathleen’s friendship, wisdom and encouragement in their seminary studies, included Fr Junray, Fr Novie Lim, Fr DJ Suguitan, Fr Dean Bongat and myself.

The birthday celebration included speeches, music and joyful conversation among all present.

Another celebration in the same week was held in Bendigo for Sr Kathleen with other Mercy Sisters.
