Knights gather for Barney's Picnic

For sixty years, the Knights have gathered on Divine Mercy Sunday to celebrate Mass and enjoy a meal together at Gehrig Estate Wines, near Barnawatha North. The event known by the Knights as 'Barney's Picnic' has now become tradition. It was started over sixy years ago by late Member and Gerhig Estate Wines owner, Barney Gehrig. The tradition continues with the support of Barney's son, Bernie Gehrig, a Knights of the Southern Cross Wodonga Branch member.

Bishop Shane Mackinlay celebrated the Mass, assisted by KSCV Chaplain Fr Tony Kerin and long-time local Priest Fr John Ware.

The Mass is celebrated on consecrated ground, underneath a tree which features a large cross. Legend has it that the Cross came from a church that was washed away by flood in to the Murray River. It was recovered near Barnawartha, placed on the tree and the ground beneath was then consecrated.

Every year this wonderful day is organised by KSCV Branches of Wodonga, Rutherglen, Myrtleford and Wangaratta; and KSCNSW Branches of Albury and Corowa.
