The Legion of Mary is a lay apostolic organisation of Catholics. The Legion aims to advance the spiritual development and social welfare of its members, and to advance the reign of Christ in our world through the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Members, called Legionnaires, attend weekly meetings of prayer, Spiritual Reading and instruction; and volunteer two hours of Apostolic work each week for the Church. This is usually done by participating in the life of the parish through visitation of the sick in their homes and in hospitals, to families and by collaborating in apostolic and missionary undertakings of the parish.

The Legion was founded in Dublin on 7 September 1921, by Frank Duff (1889-1980).The cause for Frank Duff’s canonisation was introduced by the Archbishop of Dublin in 1996. Fr Peter Ferwerda, Chaplain to the Legion of Mary Sandhurst Curia commented:

"Frank Duff’s idea was to help Catholic lay people fulfil their baptismal promises and be able to live their dedication to the Church in an organised structure, supported by fraternity and prayer. He had a great sensitivity to the needs of the poor and under-privileged. He also had a profound insight into the role of the Blessed Virgin in the plan of Redemption, and into the role of the lay faithful in the Mission of the Church."
