On Monday 14 February, St Joseph’s Primary School, Cobram celebrated its 100th anniversary. So many people have contributed to the education and formation of children in Cobram, over the last 100 years, starting with the generous commitment of the Sisters of Mercy who founded the school in 1922.
On the day St Joseph’s Primary School opened in 1922, 65 students, from Grades 1 to 8, walked into new classrooms to begin their Catholic Education journey. Now in 2022, and one hundred years later, school staff, many of whom were students at St Joseph’s themselves, (including our Principal Mrs Sarah Iddles), could not have been happier and more proud to celebrate this momentous event in the school's history.
Celebrations commenced on Monday 14 February with an Opening School Year Liturgy, which was live streamed to families and members of the community. Afterwards, teachers and students gathered outdoors as a school to sing ‘’Happy Birthday” and eat cupcakes. Celebrations continued throughout the day for students, who took part in art activities creating displays about the school community’s history and charism.
There will be several celebratory events throughout the centenary anniversary year, including a ‘’Paver” fundraiser, for a proposed amphitheatre, which will become a wonderful outdoor learning space. The biggest event of the year will be the St Joseph’s 100th Birthday Gala Night, on Saturday 5 November. Past and present students, families and staff of St Joseph's, along with the broader community, will be invited to share an evening celebrating the amazing history and future of St Joseph’s School, Cobram.
During the celebrations on 14 February, Principal Sarah Iddles thanked the St Joseph’s community past and present.
“Thank you for all the support over the years. St Joseph’s wouldn’t be the school it is today without all the hours of volunteering: support of fundraisers, the Fete Committee, P & F committees, school advisory council, school parish and the enormous generosity that the school families, businesses and wider businesses and community have continued to provide.”
