Sacred Heart Cathedral Choir seeking New Members

Auditions are now open for the Sacred Heart Cathedral Choir! The Cathedral Choir provides an amazing opportunity to develop your voice, learn more about sacred music, and contribute to the Liturgy. There are also exciting scholarship opportunities available. So, if you've ever thought about stepping up for this enriching experience, now is the time!

What does the Choir sing?
The Cathedral Choir sings music from the Church’s rich tradition of Gregorian chant and choral works in Latin and English, plus traditional and contemporary hymnody and psalmody from Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran and other church sources.

When does the Choir sing?
The Choir sings at the 11:00 a.m. Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bendigo. It also sings at Christmas services, Easter ceremonies and at Diocesan celebrations such as the Chrism Mass on Tuesday of Holy Week, and Ordination Liturgies when scheduled.

If you're interested in auditioning for the Choir, it's a good idea to attend the 11:00 a.m. Sunday Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral, to f familiarise yourself with what the Choir is all about.

Where are Rehearsals?
Rehearsals are held in the Cathedral Choir Room off Short Street and also in the Cathedral.

When are Rehearsals?

In Terms 1 and 4
Thursdays 6-8 p.m. (the earlier start allows for extended preparations for Holy Week and Christmas).
Sunday 9:45-10:40 a.m. before the 11:00 a.m. Mass.

In Terms 2 and 3
Thursdays 6:30-8:00 p.m. 
Sunday 9:45-10:40 a.m. before the 11:00 a.m. Mass.


When are Auditions?

Audtions are normally held at the Cathedral Choir Room on Sundays after the 11:00 a.m. Mass from November to February.

To audition please complete and submit the appropriate registration form by 20 February  2025.

At the Audition,
you will be required to sing a number of items to illustrate your existing skill level, including a familiar Christmas Carol (such as Silent Night) or "Advance Australia Fair". You will also be asked to complete ear tests and a passage of sight-singing.


Bursaries for Adults

Four adult choral bursaries valued at $2,400 per year are available for a soprano, alto, tenor and bass who can help serve as a leader within their vocal part.

These bursaries offer a wonderful opportunity for interested adult singers to contribute towards the liturgy at Sacred Heart Cathedral, and to further their musical formation and appreciation.Payments are paid towards the end of each semester in half-yearly instalments.


Scholarships for School Students

Scholarships valued at $1200 are available for students at local Catholic and non-denominational schools and colleges. The scholarships are paid toward the end of each semester in half-yearly installlments.  Singing with the Choir opens a world of opportunities for young people to enhance their musical education, make friends and contribute to the Liturgy. And, have fun too!
