Early-Career Teachers commissioned in Bendigo

Early-career teachers from across the Sandhurst Diocese gathered in Bendigo on 22 May for a Commissioning Mass to mark their first twelve months in Catholic education.

The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Shane Mackinlay and the Very Rev. Dr Brian Boyle EV at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bendigo. It was a special privilege for the teachers to be invited onto the Cathedral’s stunning altar, a space usually reserved for those officiating.

Executive Director of Catholic Education Sandhurst, Kate Fogarty, said the annual Commissioning Mass was a tradition that affirms the commitment of early-career teachers to serve with integrity, compassion and excellence.

“This year’s cohort has already begun making a meaningful impact in classrooms across the Diocese, bringing fresh energy and a deep sense of purpose to their roles,” she said.

Kate praised the teachers and the support structures in place to guide them: “The Magnify Sandhurst program has played a pivotal role in supporting their induction, helping them feel confident, capable and connected, as they embark on this exciting journey in Catholic education,” she said.

The following day, teachers took part in a full-day program focused on connection, support and professional development. The event included guest speakers, shared learning sessions, and opportunities to build friendships and networks with fellow early-career teachers from across the Diocese.

The event aimed to strengthen the teachers’ sense of purpose and provide lasting support as they continue their journey in Catholic education.
