Over the weekend of May 23 to 25, St Mary’s Parish, Echuca joyfully marked 150 years of Catholic faith, community and service.
The celebrations began on Friday with a warm meet-and-greet to welcome back some of the Augustinian Priests and special guests. On Saturday, parishioners embarked on a meaningful pilgrimage to significant parish sites — including the cemetery, the church, the priory, the parish hall, and St Joseph’s College — before gathering for a Vigil Mass led by Bishop Shane Mackinlay with a moving homily delivered by Fr Peter Jones, OSA. A formal dinner at the Moama Bowling Club followed, bringing together old friends, stories and shared memories.
On Sunday, celebrations continued with a joyful Family Mass at St Mary’s Primary School, followed by a vibrant and fun-filled Parish Carnival which delighted all ages.
This 150th anniversary is more than a celebration of years or buildings — it’s a celebration of people; those who have built, shaped, and continue to nurture the life of this parish. Over the weekend, we heard powerful reflections from key figures in our story: Brian O’Meara, the first lay principal of St Mary’s Primary School; Sr Cecilia of the Brigidine Sisters; and Fr David Austin OSA, the last Augustinian parish priest. Their words reminded us of the deep roots and enduring spirit of service that define our community.
We also give thanks for the many diocesan priests who have served here and, most especially, we honour the faith, generosity and perseverance of our parishioners. As Theresa Jacobs said during the formal dinner, “This parish is strong because of you — the people.”
A heartfelt thanks to our 150th Anniversary Committee for their dedication and hard work: Jenny and Rob Morris, Mel Slattery, Rod Chisholm, Leah Williams, Brendan Shingles, Barbara Pavone, Mike McCleary, Mary Atkins, Noela Boyer, Rose Quinn, Bunny Oliver, Colleen Hampson, Jasmine Ryan, and Lee Pethybridge. Special thanks also to the Historical Group — Sr Cecilia Merrigan, Judy O’Farrell and Margaret Hart, for producing a beautiful commemorative booklet.
We also honour our many volunteers who continue to give generously even as they say, “We’re getting older, Father!” Your behind-the-scenes work, music, food, prayers and smiles make all the difference.
Thank you to St Mary’s Primary School, St Joseph’s College, Echuca Printers, and Sound and Light Solutions for their incredible support.
May this celebration honour our past and inspire us to keep building a welcoming, faith-filled, and Spirit-led parish.
Happy 150th Anniversary, St Mary’s Parish!
