Benalla embraces Bishop's Visit with Open Doors and Open Hearts

In May, the Catholic community of St Joseph’s Parish, Benalla, warmly welcomed Bishop Shane Mackinlay to their parishes, schools and homes as part the diocesan Parish Visitation Program.

The visitation provided a valuable opportunity for the parish to reflect on all aspects of its life – its strengths, hopes, concerns, and vision for the future. Of particular concern for the parish is its aged and ageing population and a deep desire to create a life-giving parish for future generations.

The Parish Pastoral Council, Finance Council, and a team of dedicated volunteers worked collaboratively in the lead-up, preparing a report to share the community’s vision and direction for Bishop Shane to read before his visit.

During the visit, Bishop Shane joined Parish Priest, Fr Vijay Bandanadam, in spending time with students and teachers at St Joseph’s Primary School and FCJ College, and visiting elderly parishioners in aged-care centres and their homes. Bishop Shane’s presence was deeply appreciated – one resident expressed her gratitude with a heartfelt hug, thanking him for his time and care.

As Fr Vijay noted, “People felt truly heard. Bishop Shane’s genuine interest and gentle presence brought joy and encouragement to the whole parish.”
Each evening, the parish community gathered for shared meals, including a generous feast from the local Filipino community and a well-loved casserole night prepared by parishioners. These gatherings were filled with conversation, laughter and a sense of family.

Throughout the visit, Bishop Shane met with various parish groups, offering encouragement, wisdom, and a listening ear. He celebrated weekend Masses with Fr Vijay at St Joseph’s in Benalla and St Brigid’s in Thoona, deepening the sense of unity and shared mission.

The Parish Visitation Program supports communities in discerning their path forward, guided by faith and pastoral care. Bishop Shane remarked that the thoughtful preparation helped parishioners name their hopes and challenges clearly, and he expressed his hope that the program continues to foster renewal and a deeper experience of being a synodal Church in mission.
