On Friday, 8 August, St Joseph’s Primary School in Beechworth hosted an evening lantern walk titled Candlelight for Compassion. The pilgrimage, which coincided with National Homelessness Week and the feast day of St Mary MacKillop, was aimed at raising awareness about homelessness in the local community.
Students created their own lanterns in the lead-up to the walk, which took participants on a route through Beechworth, ending at Quercus Beechworth; an organisation that assists people experiencing housing insecurity, food shortages, and social isolation.
The walk encouraged participants to think about the challenges faced by those without stable housing, especially during the colder months. It also highlighted the importance of community-led efforts to support those in need.
After the walk, families gathered to share a simple soup meal. Parents prepared the soups, and Beechworth Bakery and Silvercreek Sourdough donated bread. Grade 6 students volunteered to serve the meals, helping to create a welcoming atmosphere, despite the chilly evening.
The event raised over $400 for Quercus, with all funds going towards their ongoing work in the community. While the financial contribution was appreciated, the evening also served to strengthen connections and raise awareness among students, families and staff.
Candlelight for Compassion was a reminder of the role schools and communities can play in fostering empathy and action. Through small steps like walking together, sharing a meal, and learning about local support services, participants were able to engage with an issue that affects many Australians, including those in regional towns like Beechworth.
