Spirit Alive and Well at St Monica's

By Jacinta Harrison

Sunday morning saw our church overflowing with parishioners past and present, coming together to celebrate the Eucharist.

Fr Brian Boyle and Fr Jackson Saunders concelebrated a joyful and hope-filled Mass, recognising not only the history and faithful contribution of many priests and parishioners to the life of our Parish, but also the vibrancy and community spirit alive today.

Our organist and those who lead us in singing the hymns, carefully chosen for the day, made a wonderful addition to the celebration.

Fr Jackson delivered a moving homily, which gave a great historical insight into the foundation of the Parish. He reminisced about his personal connection, as a young primary school boy, attending school across the road.

He spoke of fond memories of playing for the school football team, and a cheerful post-match theme song, “Good Old St Monica’s Forever”, sung with gusto to the tune of a familiar AFL club's theme song.
Accompanied by the guitar playing of Deputy School Principal Anthony Chalkley, a choir of young students sang “As I kneel before you” as our communion reflection. Principal Matt Knight who was in attendance, was rightly proud of the performance given.

Following the Mass, a crowd gathered for morning tea in our newly completed community space. Lots of chatting ensued and the joy in the room was palpable.

The spirit is alive, and the gospel is being shared today with much enthusiasm, as it has been for over 100 years at St Monica’s.
