Sacred Heart Devotion

sacred heart 200pxThe cathedral is dedicated to the Glory of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

It is named the Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Catholics use many symbols to convey aspects of their faith.  The sacred Heart of Jesus symbolises the love of Christ Jesus for all people.  This symbol dates from the Middle Ages and devotion to Christ under this title became popular from the 17th century.  It was widely practised at the time the Cathedral was built.  The feast of the Sacred Heart was introduced into the general calender of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1856.

Devotions to the Sacred Heart include acts of consecration and honour given to an image of the Sacred Heart - often depicted as a wounded heart, encircled by a crown of thorns and radiating light.  A representation of this is displayed in the large stained glass window in the Cathedral and is shown here
